I'll 2nd Steve's speedo suggestion. I got a new Savage last year and had the same thing. I could have sworn it was coming from the engine but happened across this site and found references to the speedo problem. Sure enough that's what it was. A little shrink tubing on the mounting posts fixed it. Why they haven't fixed this common issue is beyond me - look through the messages as there are a lot of fixes described in detail.
On the muffler issue, I too have been agonizing over replacing the stock pipe & have spent countless hours researching everything from Supertrapp to HD replacements. In the end I think I'll leave things as they are. The bike runs good as it is and I don't know that the benefits are worth the expense and possible risk. It's more a per individual decision than anything.
On speed, I've gone for extended periods on the ThruWay at 70mph on a windy day with trucks passing and all. No problem - although I will admit a little envy when the touring machines passed me by with little effort.
